    As Teaching Assistant to Professor Raywat Deonandan (and Rachel Thibeault in 2006-07) for International Health Theory (2006 to current):
  • Guided and evaluated students for major assignments, designed evaluation in collaboration with Dr. Deonandan, operated open content course website, delivered lectures and organized course activities as below for 65 students.

  • Teaching Assistant to Professor Prachi Srivastiva, Health and Education Perspectives in International Development (Jan-April, 2009).

    Teaching Assistant to Professor Joshua Ramisch, Social Science Research Methods, 2nd year course (Sept - Dec. 2008).

  • For second year classes of roughly 80 students, supervise discussion groups, assist students with assignments, mark exams and papers.
  • As Project Director with the Faculty of Health Sciences (2004-2006):

  • Directed the development of two new international health courses offered to nursing, health sciences, rehabilitation and medical students at University of Ottawa.
  • Led the project from the idea stage through to institutionalization.
  • Wrote two successful grant proposals for course development.
  • Authored course outlines and developed a multi-method student-led curriculum including a high-profile public seminar series, problem-based learning, workshops in grant proposal writing, and fieldwork in Africa and South America.
  • Supervised student volunteers to coordinate course activities.
  • Class size varied from 65 to 120. Up to 25 students per year placed overseas in the fieldwork course.

    Coordination and Leadership Experience

    With LASI World Skills :
  • Project manager for the Ottawa Job Match Network, a partnership between LASI World Skills, Algonquin College and the National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA (April to August 2008).
  • Involved at the initiating stage of a pilot two-year project aimed at matching Ottawa employers with internationally-trained skilled job-seekers.

  • With the Centre for International Health and Development (2004-2007):
  • Directed CIHAD’s core activities under the guidance of international leaders in global health at the University of Ottawa for several years.
  • Led faculty/student committee with an advisory role to international health curriculum, and a collaborative role engaging other campus, community and civil society stakeholders in promoting student and public engagement, strategic planning and international health advocacy at University of Ottawa and beyond.
  • Experience in Chairing meetings, writing agendas and minutes, developing internal policy, and using parliamentary procedure.

    As the Coordinator of Health Promotion's International Health Program (IHP) (2005 and 2007):

  • Recruited and managed 4 student staff and 15 volunteers.
  • Responsible for programming, evaluation and budget management ($60,000).
  • Organized events, seminars, workshops, information tables and campaigns, high school presentations and International Development Week events
  • Authored a successful grant proposal to implement a "Engaging Canada's University in Canada's Global Role" CIDA Public Engagement project, and designed and conducted Results-Based Management evaluation.
  • Highlight of CIDA project was the successful implementation of 50 presentations in Ottawa high schools by 10 University of Ottawa nursing and medical students who had returned from doing community health work in Africa.

    As a leader in student-led international health at the University of Ottawa:

  • Developed broad networks and knowledge of universities’ roles and challenges in international health and development.
  • Served on national committees, spoke at conferences, moderated panels and forums and hosted high-profile public speaker events.
  • Coordinated CIHAD/Hillman seminars from 2005 until present, organizing an average of 20 guest lectures each year and supervising student volunteers.
  • Re-created the traditional CIHAD seminars as the Hillman Seminars in International Health and Development in 2006, in honour of the late Don Hillman. Led the promotion of the series funded by a portion of the CIDA grant to engage the public in this high-quality international health and development speaker series.

    As Sponsorship Coordinator and Artist Liaison for the Ottawa Folk Festival (2001):

  • Worked directly with recording artists in making hosting arrangments.
  • Developed sponsorships with local businesses.
  • Assisted with planning and implementation of the three-day festival.
  • Community Health and Social Services

    Ottawa

    As an employee of Bruce House (2003-2007), Ottawa Inner City Health Initiative (2002-2006), the Victorian Order of Nurses (2002-2006) and the Shepherd’s of Good Hope (1999 – 2001) :

  • Between 1999 and 2007, worked in front-line social services with Ottawa’s homeless, individuals living with HIV, as well as in palliative care, managed alcohol, convalescent and home care.
  • Developed experience and skills with a highly diverse population of people living at shelters.
  • Developed clinical experience at the PSW level II, as well as with HIV/AIDS care, Harm Reduction, mental health and addictions.
  • Benefited from the mentorship of highly-regarded agencies and managers.

    Lanark County

    As a Transition-aged Youth APS Worker with Adult Protective Services (APS) in Lanark County (summer 2005):
  • Assisted youth with developmental disabilities who were transitioning from child to adult services.

    As a Client Services Worker with Tayside Community Options in Perth, Ontario (2004-2005):

  • Worked part-time with adults with developmental disabilities in a group home setting.

    As a student in a community health nursing clinical course at University of Ottawa.

  • Developed a community needs assessment and social marketing project with Bruce House and St. John’s Anglican Church
  • The project increased volunteer participation at a training and recruitment session from four (and cancellation of the session) to roughly forty, requiring a waiting list and a repeat training session for the fall.
  • Played a vital role establishing Connexions - Ottawa’s ‘Buddy Program’ for people living with HIV.
  • Recognized for excellence and presented to the Registered Nurses of Ontario.

  • Hosted over fifty lectures given as part of the CIHAD and Hillman Seminars between 2004 and 2008, including several high-profile national and international health leaders, Canada Research Chairs, local professionals and faculty.
  • MC for Screening of film A Closer Walk, introduced by UN Peace Medalist Firdaus Kharas. World AIDS Day 2006.

    Workshops and Forums

  • Designed and led the Civil Society Forum, bringing together 21 University of Ottawa groups involved in local and international civic engagement. Fall, 2006,
  • Facilitated narrative evaluation and research groups with students’ who had traveled overseas and participated in public engagement in high schools. In 2006 for the thesis, and in 2007 for program evaluation.
  • Facilitated project planning workshop and rehearsal with Youth in Power in preparation for Looking Forward Community Forum, March, 2008.

    Event Organizing

  • Student University Network for Social and International Health 2006 National Conference. As coordinator for International Health Program, partnered with SUNSIH to organize and host the national conference at University of Ottawa.
  • International Development Week - University of Ottawa.
    • Obtained funding from CIDA and led the planning phase for IDW 2007 between March and December 2006
    • Organized and hosted panels for IDW 2007 and 2008
    • Served on the organizing committee for both years.
  • uOttawaGlobe Cup. Fall 2006. Organized a two-day soccer tournament fundraiser with 130 players, 28 games and dozens of local sponsors and organizations.The event raised over $2000 for HIV orphans through the Canada Africa Community Health Alliance (CACHA). It was played in a park across the street from the Tanzanian High Commission, with the Deputy High Commissioner addressing the players and spectators during the barbeque.
  • Imagine: Fair Trade Coffeehouse. November 2005. As coordinator of IHP in collaboration with student organizations, organized a coffeehouse and hosted a panel discussion on fair trade coffee. Attended by over 200 students.
  • Alienation and Integration. 1999. An event on environmental awareness in the social environment. Enviro-Action Working Group, Ontario Public Interest Research Group, University of Ottawa.
  • Interactive Art – Live music, live painting and art display. Fall 1997. Intercultural Club, University of Ottawa.
  • Hosted the display at University of Ottawa for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines during the conference in Ottawa that led to the Ottawa Treaty. Hosted by the Intercultural Club in 1997.

  • Supervised a fourth year marketing student in developing a marketing and communications plan for International Health Program’s core activities as well as CIDA public engagement activities (2006-07).
  • Employ effective and creative marketing methods through multiple channels at minimal cost with a record of success.
