Article 50 Million: An Estimate of the Number of Scholarly Articles in Existence
Submitted by arif on Sun, 01/31/2010 - 12:39Abstract:
How many scholarly research articles are there in existence? Journal articles first appeared in 1665,and the cumulative total is estimated here to pass 50 million in 2009. This sum was arrived at based on published figures for global annual output for 2006, and analyses of annual output and growth rates
published in the last decade.
Full-Text of Author's final refereed version Accepted for publication in April with minor revisions to come to Learned Publishing, UK.
Endowment of Basic Capital as a Human Right
Submitted by arif on Thu, 01/28/2010 - 18:46In the 21st century, where money becomes almost universally required to obtain the necessities of life, the endowment of basic capital as a birthright for all human beings through a system of constitutionally guaranteed citizen banking, gauranteed living income and access to microcredit is necessary both to end poverty and the corruption of aid, and to stabilize the global monetary system. This is possible as globalization creates one closed economy, as opposed to a collection of (relatively) 'open' economies.

Breaking News: December 7th, 2009
Submitted by arif on Mon, 12/07/2009 - 11:41This was first written on Dec. 6th, 2006 in commemoration of first good settling snow for the year. I'm making first snow as a moving holy day from my perspective. It's a rebirth of the life that winter gives, winter is not death, but it is a different sort of life we are often ungrateful for. A child who has but a few winters they can remember knows how to celebrate this holiday as they become renewed with joy and play. The complainers dampen our spirit and work makes us forget how to play with simple nature, no admission charged.
This story is something I like to put out on First Snow. It is a true story, not a news story only because everyday events are not news. I hope you enjoy this, send it around and give blessings for the magic of snow and every other everyday delight.

The Great Invisible Big Toe
Working in a large University, as an agent of change at the lower end of the pole, I made the following observation: the Law of the Giant Invisible Toe.
Those at the upper end of the pole can have enormous toes, the larger they are the more invisible they are so you don't know if you will step on one.
Those at the bottom working for change cannot see the toes, and since they are large they step on them.
Stepping on these toes causes a reaction. The reaction is usually overstated given that these are small toes that are stepping on big ones.
Those with small toes at the bottom end of pole rarely get stepped on, when they do they are not allowed to do anything about it.
Thus the Law is that the small toes are not permitted to step on the big ones, which are invisible. But it is hardly noticed when the big ones step on the small ones.
Flight Ecstasy
Submitted by arif on Tue, 11/03/2009 - 22:07Sometimes when I travel by plane on a flight home, perhaps from the emotions of going and returning, I get ecstatic. Maybe its something to do with altitude. Last time I burst into tears listening to music. I must have looked pretty strange, good thing I had a whole row to myself. This piece was recorded with good friend Derek, who is a wiz on electronic music and composed the background music. I just hooked up my guitar and played. Hope you enjoy.

My brother, moon and stars
I cannot seem to find words today
I am a drop in this ocean
Great tides move through history
as a reflection of eternity
Not even all the noise of humanity
approaches a whisper
as this Great Wind passes by
Nothing lasts forever
Submitted by arif on Wed, 10/21/2009 - 02:13A poem written in 1999 from the black journal, a. jinha
I am no Muslim, no Jew, nor Christian, nor Buddhist
I am nearer to nothing
as they say, nothing lasts forever!
These are clothes that I wear, Ismaili or Buddhist
the names are reference points or social conventions
underneath, I am naked
aren't you?
I am a lover and a fool
that is why I have these words
but fools have always cried out for love
It is in the crying
and the soft silence that follows
that the great Mother makes us all her minstrels
singing and dancing sweet spirituals
in a great and vast silent sky
